Houston, Texas, Is a Waste Management Mecca

FCC Environmental, Waste Connections, and Waste Connections all announced plans in 2011 to move to Houston's suburbs. California's regulatory climate was too harsh. Houston already hosted companies like WCA Waste Corporation and Strategic Materials. Browning-Ferris Industries founded Houston over 50 years ago. Its success made it the first publicly traded company in the industry. The market has grown in all major categories ever since.

Recycling

Residents in Houston can get curbside recycling. This service takes common recyclables like bottles, newspapers and cans, but also larger items, such as tree waste. Visit the city's website for more details. Residents can access their waste services online and request new ones. They can also contact their service provider to report a problem with their waste collection. There are four drop-off locations in Houston.

Automated garbage collection

Houston, Texas, has recently implemented automated garbage collection. The city's new automated garbage truck has cameras, a garbage compactor, and retractable extending arms. But it is the community that has to ensure safety when garbage collection takes place. It is important to keep garbage cans away from vehicles and poles, and make sure there is enough space for the truck to pull up. You must also face the street with your garbage bins.

Landfill gas utilization

The best way to make use of the existing infrastructure is to use landfill gas as waste management. It is cheaper than natural gas and generates energy. The energy that it produces has about half the heating value of natural gas, which is 35,406 kJ/m3. You can mix landfill gas with other fuels to create more energy. This allows it to be used both on-site and commercially.

Manpower shortages

Houston's municipal waste collection agency is having trouble filling dozens of jobs. Private companies are hiring drivers, who are paid higher wages and work less hours. These vacancies cause delays in recycling pickups. COVID-19 is another problem in the city. This virus has left 370 solid waste management workers unable to work. The number of workers out of work is growing every day.

Sustainability initiatives

Houston has many sustainability programs. For example, the University of Houston started serving green-friendly students by installing 300 outdoor recycling bins. The University of Houston has become a member of Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and adopted the sustainability tracking assessment system and rating system. The university also formed a Sustainability Committee on September 2008.

FAQ

What are management theories?

Management Concepts are the management principles and practices that managers use in managing people and resources. They include such topics as human resource policies, job descriptions, performance evaluations, training programs, employee motivation, compensation systems, organizational structure, and many others.

What is the difference between TQM and Six Sigma?

The major difference between the two tools for quality management is that six Sigma focuses on eliminating defect while total quality control (TQM), on improving processes and decreasing costs.

Six Sigma is a methodology for continuous improvement. This method emphasizes eliminating defects using statistical methods such p-charts, control charts, and Pareto analysis.

This method attempts to reduce variations in product output. This is done by identifying and correcting the root causes of problems.

Total quality management involves measuring and monitoring all aspects of the organization. This includes training employees to improve their performance.

It is often used to increase productivity.

What do we mean when we say "project management"?

It refers to the management of activities related to a project.

We help you define the scope of your project, identify the requirements, prepare the budget, organize the team, plan the work, monitor progress and evaluate the results before closing down the project.

Why is it important that companies use project management methods?

Project management techniques are used to ensure that projects run smoothly and meet deadlines.

This is because most businesses rely heavily on project work to produce goods and services.

These projects are essential for companies.

Companies could lose their time, reputation, and money without effective project management.

What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing is a method to reduce waste and increase efficiency using structured methods. They were developed in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation (in the 1980s). The aim was to produce better quality products at lower costs. Lean manufacturing emphasizes removing unnecessary steps from the production process. It is composed of five fundamental elements: continuous improvement; pull systems, continuous improvements, just-in–time, kaizen, continuous change, and 5S. Pull systems involve producing only what the customer wants without any extra work. Continuous improvement is constantly improving upon existing processes. Just-in-time is when components and other materials are delivered at their destination in a timely manner. Kaizen refers to continuous improvement. It is achieved through small changes that are made continuously. Five-S stands for sort. It is also the acronym for shine, standardize (standardize), and sustain. These five elements are used together to ensure the best possible results.

Lean Production System

Six key concepts underlie the lean production system.

  • Flow - The focus is on moving information and material as close as possible to customers.
  • Value stream mapping - Break down each stage in a process into distinct tasks and create an overview of the whole process.
  • Five S's – Sort, Put In Order Shine, Standardize and Sustain
  • Kanban - visual cues such as stickers or colored tape can be used to track inventory.
  • Theory of constraints - identify bottlenecks in the process and eliminate them using lean tools like kanban boards;
  • Just-in Time - Send components and material directly to the point-of-use;
  • Continuous improvement: Make incremental improvements to the process instead of overhauling it completely.
